Celebrating pirate Radio London
The impact of the pirate radio stations will never be forgotten. The buccaneering spirit which circumvented dated British media law by broadcasting from just far away to be out of reach - on a boat or fort at sea!
Caroline came first, but then 60 years ago on December 23rd 1964, Radio London arrived.
With the backing of the Americans who were way ahead in the art of pop music radio, this station powered away with its Top 40 playlist, fast-talking ad-libbing presenters - and jingles to sing along to. Just in time to form the swinging soundtrack for teenagers making the most of a fast-changing world.
Names on board included Tony Blackburn, Kenny Everett, Dave Dennis, Keith Skues, Tommy Vance, Tony Brandon and Dave Cash.
John Peters pays tribute to this remarkable station - which was to influence UK radio hugely - on Monday December 23rd at 6pm.
Drop him a line now with your memories of Radio London - the station they called Big L for good reason.
