TOGs
Hellen Bach, moderator of the TOGs forever Facebook group writes:
Sir Terry Wogan changed my life forever.
He'd refer to his TOGs - 'Terry' Old Geezers'. I was one of them, following him and his passion for music and laughter and talking to ‘just one person’.
It was through listening to his programme I met a whole bunch of TOGs. One of them was Norman Macintosh. We married and had many wonderful years working with Terry raising money for CIN under our charity goods banner. My darling Norman died last year but I know I can keep on doing good work because they both believed in me.
At this time of year, as Children In Need hits our TV screens, people think about Terry.
Terry Wogan was Mr Children in Need for so many years; he would look down the camera lens and ask people to donate and thousands, if not millions, of people did just that.
Terry loved Children in Need and visited various projects over the years. One day, he went to Glasgow and met us for lunch the next day.
He was visibly moved, held my hand and said to me that he had met a young couple who had fallen in love, got married and a few years later were pregnant. When the baby arrived, it was quickly apparent that they couldn’t see or hear, would need constant care and would have a shorter life than normal. With tears in his eyes he told me how everyone’s life can suddenly change - forever.
I was lucky enough to be invited to meet Terry and talk about how The TOGs could perhaps raise funds for Children In Need. I was told if I could get the TOGs behind one project, Terry would support it.
At the height of the TOGs, we were raising over a million pounds per year. We were busy selling Janet and John CDs, recording albums, Christmas songs, selling clothing, mugs - all working TOGether.
20 years later, our TOGs forever Facebook group has 1500 members who care as much as Terry did.
We laugh, love music and support each other. We have no swearing because Terry wouldn’t swear on the radio. I try to run the group in the way he ran his show with kindness.
We will always remember him, he was our inspiration and hopefully his love and kindness will carry on through us for many years to come.
Listening to Boom Radio brings a feeling of familiarity as Radio 2 did in the past.
